The city of Hiawassee was settled on May 17, 1956. Hiawassee translates to a Cherokee Indian word for "meadow". Lake Chatuge is created between the mountains for some of the most spectacular views. Like most North Georgia cities, there are plenty of outdoor activities and festivals for all ages. Hiawassee is "North Georgia's Hidden Jewel".

Many counrty singers perform concerts year round at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds. Art is an important part of Hiawassee and host the Hiawassee Festival of Arts annually. There are more activities in addition to the Georgia Mountain Fall Festivals. Plan a day trip to Brasstown Bald and see the take in the sights that Hiawasse has to offer. Enjoy a picnic at the park with family and friends or antique shop and head over to the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds where there is always something going on.
